Purpose of the organisation

Support of social welfare in the context of sensory organs and speech impediments, charitable support of the activities of the Tartu University Hospital’s Ear Clinic Foundation and support of medical research and development projects in the public interest.

The primary objective of the Audiere non-profit organisation is to find sufficient money for those children who are in the cochlear implant queue to have their operations as quickly as possible, with the latest model inserted.

Every year between 9 and 19 children with hearing impediments are discovered in Estonia. 80-90% of the parents of such children are hearers. The high-tech medical science of today is capable of turning a deaf person into a hearer and, accordingly, into a speaker. Early discovery of deafness is important, preferably in the first months after birth, because the first three years of life are the most important period for speech development. Most newborn babies in Estonia are screened for hearing problems at maternity hospitals.

The cochlear implant is a high-tech solution whose timely application ensures that a child who was born deaf or became deaf can learn to hear and talk. The majority of children who receive the implants do learn to hear as a result and that is why their speech also develops up to a level that allows them to attend ordinary nurseries and schools and be educated on a par with their peers.
